Is it really already the end of August? Summer just flew by this year, much quicker than it did last year.
I have about six blog posts half written and waiting for me in my private files on here, proof that I did write over the summer. But every time I got a good chunk of writing in, the kids would wake up from their naps, or Fiona would start dancing on the table, or Becca would need something, or… It amazes me sometimes that we ever get anything accomplished around here.
We’ve done a bit of everything this summer. We went to see the Jamesville Balloonfest, we went to a couple fairs, and we went strawberry and blueberry picking (twice each). We attended a few family reunions. We went hiking, went to parks, and even went to a drive-in theater.
We also spent a week in Western NY, camping at Letchworth State Park, visiting Niagara Falls and the Buffalo Zoo, hitting a water park, and getting a lot of sight-seeing in. It was a blast, and our cabin at Letchworth was beautiful. Unfortunately, the end of our vacation (we got home on Sunday) signaled the end of summer. Becca starts school in a week, but she goes in Thursday to see her classroom and drop off the pile of supplies we had to get. And I start classes the following Monday (with my own pile of supplies). Summer has officially come to a close.
I’m okay with that, though. It’s been a good summer, but I’m ready for autumn. I’m also ready to get back to school. We have all of our school supplies purchased, and I’m at least a few chapters into each of my text books. Becca is excited to start kindergarten. She already likes her teacher, and she’s looking forward to making new friends.
She’s also looking forward to starting dance classes. We have her signed up to take a ballet and tap fundamentals course downtown. It looks like a great program, and she can’t wait to get started. I think that it’s going to be good for her. She’ll get to meet more kids her age, develop a little discipline, and have fun all at the same time. I’m looking forward to meeting the other dance moms. I don’t get out much on my own, so between school and dance, I’m hoping to meet some new people. I’m also playing around with the idea of joining the PTA at Becca’s new school. I think some of the things they do are really neat, and I’d like to join in and help out.
Another big part of the summer, to backtrack just a bit, was the time I spent practicing with my fiddle. I’m not great yet (not by a long shot) but I am improving. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a lesson since mid-June. My teacher went to Ireland for the summer to visit relatives, and I won’t be starting lessons again until the second half of September. I have made a lot of progress on my own, but I’m looking forward to getting back to regular lessons.
We have a Labor Day party and Mark’s company picnic this weekend, and we’re trying to fit in one last day trip to bid our farewell to summer before the hectic crush of autumn sets in. I’ll be back to regular blogging next week, once things settle down.
