This was technically my third Mother’s Day, counting the year that I was pregnant with Becca. And this is the first year that I have actually felt like I really deserved some celebration.
Being a mom is hard work. It requires saying no when you want to say yes. It requires a lot of late nights, early mornings, and missed sleep. It means paying the extra monthly fee for DVR, because you know you won’t be able to watch any show longer than 30 minutes in one shot. It is dealing with a night of puking, sleeping on the uncomfortable pullout couch next to your child once their stomach finally settles down.
It is catching a cold, which turns into pink eye, which turns into an ear infection, and still keeping up all of your mothering duties, even when all you want to do is eat a big bowl of ice cream (helps with the post nasal drip) and then go to bed. For a week.
So, yes. I deserve to be celebrated. I have won my hard-earned position as a mother. And I am proud.
I had a really great Mother’s Day. I woke up early, spent some time writing, and then Mark and Becca took me out for a pancake breakfast. After we came home, we put Becca down for a nap, and I made pudding cookies. After the cookies were done, I started on my pasta sauce for the taco lasagna. I will put up the recipe tomorrow, for those of you who would like to try it out.
My uncle Scott and his girlfriend Missy came over for dinner. Mark and Scott get along really well. They both love video games and boring movies, so they have a lot to talk about. Scott and I used to hang out a lot, when I was still living at home, and it’s always nice to spend time with him. We used to spend hours every week or so playing guitar, one song after the other. Neither of us play much anymore, but it’s still a lot of fun to get together. Everyone loved the taco lasagna, and the cookies. I even had salad, chips and salsa, and Italian bread. Mark teased me about mixing cultures again (Mexican and Italian) but I think it was fine.
And now, it is bed time. Time to go grab Becca and get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a long day, as I try to make up for all of the work that didn’t get done today.
