Changing Tastes

by Margo on May 29, 2009

Throughout my years of watching my weight, trying to lose a few pounds here or there, I have always felt like I was at a distinct disadvantage over many other dieters.

I hated salad. Lettuce, tomatoes, raw peppers and onions.. eww. And just the scent of cucumbers makes me nauseous. This makes for very poor dieting, obviously.

I could never deny all of the healthy bonuses of eating leafy greens and other raw veggies. I like carrots, peas and beans. I enjoy broccoli and cauliflower. And I never suffered from any shortage of cooked vegetables. (I even love brussel sprouts and spinach.)

With trying to lose a few pounds, and trying to eat healthier while looking forward to becoming a mom again, I came to the realization that it was time to give salad another chance. So I picked up a bag of mix over the weekend, along with some dressing. I tried out some ginger tangerine vinaigrette, which was okay, but way too sweet. We also got some ranch, which was much better.

So last night, for the first time ever, I actually had a bowl of salad. And enjoyed it. I threw some of Mark’s lunch meat (turkey) and some swiss on there, dumped on more ranch than is probably necessary, but I ate it. And I’ll work on cutting back on my dressing amounts once I get used to eating all of the lettuce.

I could never stomach salads before. It kind of makes me wonder what else I hated as a child that I might enjoy now. Pasta salad? Potato salad? Might be worth a try. Although I don’t think my taste have changed that much. But we’ll see.

This weekend, when we go out to get groceries, I’m going to be picking up stuff for more creative, and healthier, salads. I’m thinking fruit, different veggies, and maybe some cheese. But I haven’t really pinned anything down yet.

What do you like on your salads? What types of greens do you use?

Are there any foods that you hated as a child that you enjoy now? Any that you still hate?

Yay for the salad. And I still hate mac salad and roast beef and boiled ham and bologna and sausage.

Ugh…eggplant. My mom made eggplant parmigian at least once a week. Yuck. Cannot stand the stuff still. Also, do not like potato salad. I buy it for hubby, but the kids do not like it either. Something about cold potatoes.
As for eating healthier, I am right there with you. Working on losing weight-joined weight watchers-and trying to eat more salad as well. I’ll let you know if I fare any better with the salad thing. :)
